Direct TV at a Glance

It was in the year 1994 when California-based company, DirecTV, offered an exclusive service that forever changed the viewing experience of people across America. DirecTV installed a satellite dish that was capable of providing high-quality satellite television service. This project exceeded the expectations of many viewers and revolutionized that concept of telecommunications. DirecTV became so powerful that long-time cable-TV viewers switched to this technology right away.

Wonder how DirecTV technology works? It uses a small, oval-shaped satellite dish which receives signals from several satellites positioned around the equator of the Earth. Each of the DirecTV installed in a home comes with a multiple transponders which exchange signals from the company’s two broadcasting stations located in Castle Rock, Colorado and Los Angeles, California. These broadcasting stations get feed from hundred of content providers through channels like digital tape, fiber optic cable and more often through satellite.

Remember that in order to transmit content through satellites, shows should be in digital form. DirecTV has set high standards when it comes to satellite transmissions. To accomplish such feat, the company uses state of the art technology. DirecTV follows the MPEG-2 standard when it comes to transfer of audio and visual contents. This format is a compressed digital data that are gathered by DirecTV satellites and directed to thousands of televisions sets in American homes.

Aside from satellites, DirecTV also uses an IRD receiver (integrated receiver / decoded) and a remote control to manipulate digitized information. Once the satellites around the Earth gathered the data, the IRD segregates the channels and directs the signals to the television sets. On the other hand, the remote control serves as a guide to browse through all the channels.

As always, DirecTV strives to bring clear signal and high-quality MPEG-2 service to each residence it caters. With this mission, the company is now considered a top player in satellite TV market.
